Raising Lusitanos2018-08-02T18:21:27+00:00

 “When I bestride him, I soar, I am a hawk: he trots the air; the earth sings when he touches it;

the basest horn of his hoof is more musical than the pipe of Hermes.”

William Shakespeare, Henry V

Breeding Lusitanos lies at the heart of our work at La Donaira. We currently have more than 70, bred and raised according to natural horsemanship principles, otherwise known as horse whispering. By understanding the horses’ natural instincts and ways of communicating, we are able to train them without causing stress or fear, and the horses are happier and more responsive as a result.

The Lusitano is the world’s oldest saddle horse, infact DNA analysis suggests they were domesticated before Neolithic times. The close partnership of Lusitano and rider observed by visitors to the Iberian peninsula more than 3000 years ago, is said to have given rise to the myth of the centaur. For their speed and strength they were known as ‘Sons of the Wind’.

We want to preserve the quality, versatility and beauty of these ancient horses and evolve their unique genetic code into a 21st century sport horse for dressage, working equitation and advanced leisure riding. Their nobility, intelligence and sensitivity also makes our horses ideal partners for Equine Assisted Therapy.
