La Donaira’s Stud

La Donaira´s stud farm consists of about 30 breeding mares. In 2018, 14 of our mares have been in gestation thanks to the crossing with the best Lusitano stallions, so we avoid consanguinity and we make a selection of functionality and sports qualities (dressage). The stallions with which we have worked have been Rubí, a multi-awarded horse in dressage competitions, and a young horse called Jasmim, which brings very good performance from his father Escorial, currently competing in Grand Prix and grandson of the famous Espartacus, in addition to having been in 2018 champion of Morphology in Portugal. Jasmim´s important mother line comes via Peralta from Cenoura, an important highly sportive line which we have cultivated in our genetic via her three sons Peralta, Solar and Vulcan.

The reproduction and breeding of our Lusitano takes place naturally and in total freedom, although we also use the most advanced techniques in artificial insemination and embryo transplantation, for which we have a specialised and highly qualified veterinary team. We mount and train the mares as it is very important to obtain information about them before using them as breeders.

At La Donaira we start training young horses from the age of three, both males and females, selecting those that show the best qualities for the sport and then for the different disciplines. From the age of three we begin with the technique of natural dressage or horse whispering, this way we respect the strength and instinct of the horses so that their process of growth and training is completely natural. And once they are ready, we generally compete in the discipline of dressage with several horses at different levels. With our Lusitano we have reached the highest level of competition, Grand Prix with our horse Madhy LD, currently retired for competition but used as a teaching horse. Today we are very excited about our offsprings and the high potential they show. That makes us to look into an exciting future with our stud farm.
