SALON SESSIONS: ALLEGRA GIAGU (APRIL 17)

The jet-setting Australian-born mezzo-soprano sings arias lovers of Mozart may well know. Just for us!

She flies constantly between London, New York and Melbourne, but the mezzo-soprano Allegra Giagu is taking time out to head up into the serranĂa, to stand by the Steinway, and sing to us.
This promises to be a very special Salon Session indeed for lovers of Mozart because Allegra’s inky passionate voice makes her a perfect match for best-loved roles in best-loved operas – from Countess in Figaro and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni to Dorabella in Cosi Fan Tutte.

She first came into the media spotlight as soloist for The Edinburgh Military Tattoo – Salute to Australia, leading to a collaboration with Dame Judi Dench and ClassicFM in London. Recent collaborations include The Carnival, (West End, touring, Hamburg, Sydney), Photo Socrates (Vienna), Oxford Lieder Festival, and in Verdi’s Macbeth, and this season she made a debut with Pinchgut Opera.

Opera is at the heart of her work – she made her debut at Sydney Opera House aged eleven – but Allegra is known also for chamber music and oratorio and working with new composers. She says, “I’m always game to try new things, whether it be an art installation, singing whilst dangling upside down in an aerial hoop, or dancing and playing castanets.”

We are looking for a hoop to rig up right now. Hurry if you want tickets – space is limited.
